"Il quaderno di Maya" di Isabel Allende.
Here we are with the Books Cafè! Today I want to talk to you about the
book I've just finished reading:
"Maya's notebook" by Isabel Allende
(which will be realesed in english on 5 June 2012)
Maya Vidal is a 19 years old girl escaping a past full of troubles: alcohol, drug, prostitution. She is a fragile yet strong soul who, after the death of the beloved granpa, Popo, is going adrift. A girl in seek of herself and looking for that sense of protection felt only when she was a child sleeping in the bed with her grandparents.
After the tunnel of drug and acohol addiction lived in Las Vegas, Maya is sent to Chile, to the Chiloè islands, by her grandma who is originally from that country. She will stay with Manuel, an old friend of her grandma and will experiment the closed island community life.
A book about an education to life with a thriller twist and some mentions about Chile past civil history. This is "El cuaderno de Maya".
Now, a preamble: I love Isabel Allende, she is one of my fave writers, I have all of her books, I'm in love with her magic and sensual way of describing strong women and worlds between religion and heathen rites.
But.
But I have to say that I didn't really like this book. Well, it is wonderful written, it is fascinating, it is moving, but it seems to me that something is missing. I don't think that Isabel Allende has been able to describe Maya, a nowadays 19 years old, in all her complexity. Maybe I just prefer Isabel Allende when she talks about strong women from past ages, if you know what I mean.
Now I'm waiting for the stabs from all Isabel Allende's fan. But, believe me, I adore her even if didn't really like this book and the way Maya is described.
